The History of My Morris

Hi, my name is John Blaikie and I live in Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand. I've always been keen on cars and motorcycles and started my working career as an aircraft engineer so I have many of the skills required to undertake a lot of the tasks involved in a ground-up restoration. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get into Morry's restoration immediately after he went off the road for the more usual reasons of making a living. However about 1998 I started to get serious about this restoration and although there is a long way still to go you will see on the following pages that at least Morry is starting to look like a car again.

My Morris was purchased new at the Works at Cowley in 1936 by John Allan, a farmer from the Awatere Valley in the province of Marlborough near the top of the South Island of New Zealand.

In the mid 1950's John sold the Morris to Arnold Souness, also a farmer in the Awatere Valley. In 1960 Arnold sold the car to John Boyce, another Awatere farmer who in turn sold the car to Jack McKenzie, an agricultural contractor, who lived in the township of Seddon in the Awatere Valley.

The dry conditions of the Awatere contributed to the fact that there was no rust or timber rot in the car even 65 years after he was produced at the Works.

I purchased Morry from Jack McKenzie in 1974 for the princely sum of NZ$150 and for several years Morry was my principal means of transport, but in late 1982 his engine was becoming very tired with low oil pressure so I decided to retire him from the road before engine failure and perhaps start his restoration.

The rest of the story carries on from there.

Morry's big 6 cylinder engine at rebuilt shortblock stage just prior to going back into the chassis.

Here's me swinging the engine back into the chassis.

Morry's big chrome plated radiator goes on.

A trailerload of Morry's panels arrives home after sandblasting and priming at GT Repairs here in Christchurch

Morry's body goes back onto the chassis as we prepare to prime and paint.

Now Morry's starting to look like a car again after all those years.

It's a little hard from this photo to really appreciate just how big this car is.

Troubleshooting & Hints

In this section I'll include some of my tips and tricks I've learned while restoring Morry. Where appropriate, I'll include steps or pictures to help clarify my explanations. Please feel free to contribute your own tips - I'll post the best ones so everyone can see them.
