Preparing for Mondello
I told you I would be back it was just too much fun. As those of you who have read previous articles know I took part in the June Classic day at Mondello in my Buckler. We got to do a practice Run and take part in the pre 1955 race what fun. I didnt apreciate on the day how easy it was to take part because we where supposely doing parade laps so no license, scrutiny or full fire proof suites where required. So it was a bit of a shock on getting ready for Mondello to find I needed the following:
- Current driving suite complete with fireproof underwear, gloves, boot's
- Current helmet fire proof race variety
- Fire extinguisher
- Kill switch
All in not much change out of €1000 I went to Murray Motorsport they are very helpful and have a great website with everthing priced and viewable
With the Suite and gear organised it was time to get the license another mountain I wasnt looking forward to climbing. On researching what was required I knew I needed a race license National A or B. To get this you have to do a day in Mondello €275 + get a license pack from Motorsport Ireland.

The Dauphine - Renault's 1950's corvette beater?
The Dauphine was launched in 1956 to replace the highly successful Renault 4CV. Originally to be callled the Corvette, as 1956 brought another similarly badged (but highly inferior!) car to the market, the wise French Renault people gave us the Dauphine. Like the 4CV, the Dauphine used a single-shell monocoque body. It was a 4-door saloon design as was the 4CV, but it lacked the rear-hinged "suicide doors" of the 4CV. It was also heavier and 12 inches (300 mm) longer than its predecessor, but used the same engine, albeit a version increased in size and power from 760 cc to 845 cc and 19 hp to 32 hp (14 kW to 24 kW) Its 0-60mph time was calculated Road & Track magazine to be a long winded 32 seconds although they did claim performance and power at 70 miles an hour.
The R1090 of 1956 was built and sold until 1961. In 1960 the Aerostable suspension became available. This was not a replacement for the agricultural swing-axle rear end, but added extra rubber springs up front, and auxiliary air spring units (mounted inboard of the conventional coils) at the rear. Although this setup gave a softer ride in most conditions, it firmed up rapidly as the payload increased. For the sporty driver, the main advantage was that when only two people were being carried, the rear wheels now had a small degree of negative camber and more grip when cornering.
